Partly cloudy. Near record high temperatures. High near 90F. Winds W at 5 to 10 mph..

Mostly cloudy. Low around 55F. Winds light and variable.

It almost sounds like Redlands won the SuperLotto by getting a $30 million grant from the state for the Homekey project. But let’s think about how the City Council’s latest social experiment pencils out in the long run.

The $30 million from the state is said to cover 98% of the operational cost for three years. The other 2% would be $200,000 per year. Do we feel lucky yet?

Redlands will take over the operational cost burden in Year 4, and probably through eternity. That has been estimated at $550,000 per year. For some reason, that sounds wildly optimistic. Also optimistic is the number of people to be housed. Ninety-eight has been projected. There are 98 units. That must assume no family or friends or pharmaceutical consultants, etc.

The City Council has interpreted this as something that the voters wanted when Measure T was approved. Among other things, the information flyer said that they would use the new tax money for “addressing the homeless problem.” They’re doing just that, giving them a permanent Redlands address.
