The German-born doctor has transformed the face of a legion of fans, so we wanted to know how Dr Barbara Sturm washes off the day and prepares for her best night's sleep.  

Hello and welcome to our editorial series Bedtime Beauty Stories. It's a space for talented individuals and big names in beauty to share how they get ready for slumber, including ways to wind down, nighttime beauty rituals and go-to remedies for falling asleep. We catch up with one of Australia's most in-demand skin experts, Jocelyn Petroni and Nicole Manning, makeup maven Charlotte Tilbury, sexologist Chantelle Otten, natural skincare pioneer Tata Harper.

If you've ever perused the shelves of Mecca and come across the ultra-minimal but very chic all-white packaging from Dr Barbara Sturm, you could guess that this woman means business.

Not familiar? The German aesthetics doctor actually trained in sports medicine, and initially became famous for treating athletes with her anti-inflammatory protocols (including one Kobe Bryant). She's the brains behind Hollywood's famous vampire facial, and her line of paraben-free, cruelty-free, science-backed skincare became the toast of beauty insiders. But now she's found global fame, and a legion of devoted skin card fans. So we were curious as to how to queen of high-tech skin unwinds from the day and puts herself to bed.

Just before bed I'll cleanse my skin and apply my Night Serum to boost its renewal processes while I sleep. It contains active ingredients that include cotton thistle extract to counteract dryness and stressed skin, senna alata extract that aids the skin's own protection against UV-induced damage and poria cocos, which provides astringent, toning and calming properties. ...

I also take my Sleep Food supplements right before bed, especially after a stress-filled day. It's a blend of natural active ingredients that relax the body and mind, and helps me fall asleep sooner and deeper.

My nighttime routine goes like this: I start with my Cleanser. Cleansing my skin before bed is essential to remove pollution, pathogens, oil, makeup, and other impurities from the skin before sleep. Cleansing also prepares the skin to receive active ingredients that assist the body’s reparative processes in the night.

I then apply my Super Anti-Aging Serum which hydrates and nourishes skin using a potent blend of antioxidants and minimises the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. I then apply my Night Serum. I finish with my Super Anti-Aging Eye Cream, Super-Anti Aging Face Cream and my Super-Anti-Aging Neck & Decollete Cream. I take my Good Night supplements before bed.

I always make sure my room is dark and quiet and I do not look at any of my digital devices as they can trigger the fight or flight hormone Cortisol that keeps you awake, close to bedtime or in the night.

I never have a heavy meal before bedtime and try to have a light and early dinner. I am not a late night snacker.

Sometimes I go to bed with my eight-year-old and pet her back and we both fall asleep early. I try to go to sleep before 10pm if I can.

I love listening to Deepak Chopra meditations for ten to 20 minutes to help me relax.
